The Dreamweaver – age 20

Despair and delight animate a potent landscape of chilled blood, frozen bones, hollow metal and icy dirt. The sun is fading in the distant west as the moon rises on the eastern hills.

She sees the scavengers coming alive over a hungry red sky. The terrain is rife with so much life in so many deaths. The air is thick with angry souls, desperate cries and victorious screeches. She walks numbly through the battlefield of the day.

They cannot hear or see her through their glazed eyes and final breaths. She knows some of them through their own patterned cloths tied around their necks. This night is too dark for stars to shine. They are gone and she knew them.

He breathes her name like an encouraging prayer for life. He lies on the ground and stares at the stars of a winter’s sky. He is tired and cannot feel the muscles in his weary body. His throat is dry and his breath is ragged. He can hear her laughter over the shrieks of those birds circling about the stars above him. He remembers the faint scent of her hair in roses. He can hear her whispering his name.

She finds him among the thousands and gathers his head in her arms. She softly calls him to her and sees his soul ebbing. She says the prayer of protection to guard the remnants of his life. He takes in a deep breath and tells he loves her for all of eternity. He looks at her against the starlit night. She is so beautiful and radiant even when she cries. He smiles and stares past her into the night forever.

She is too numb to sob away the pain that is choking her heart. She can feel her life eclipsing with his and she is barely breathing. It seems all of time stops to await the gathering of their shattered and transient memories of their life together. She lets out a powerful vow in one scream that silences the heavens: she will find him again.

\\ Tears rolled and crashed as she awoke. She said the prayer of surrender to guide his spirit home. She would find him again and he would remember her. Her heart and mind throbbed with the evanescent fragments of him, of them and of her salient vow.

\\ She scanned her memories for clues but could not identify him in this life of hers. It was not her current boyfriend whom she felt in her mind. The list of hints continued to haze her judgement about continuing her relationship with her beau. He was such a sweet guy who gave her so much but she made a promise to another. She understood now why she never did feel as deeply for him as he felt for her.

\\ This could be another broken heart best healed through a fast break-up. They had only been exclusive to each other for three months and he loved her so much more than she felt she could love him back. It was not fair to him to receive so little in return. It would be sad but it could hurt less with time.
